Conductor Joseph Young joins forces with his brother Robert Young, renowned saxophonist, for a program that explores rich textures and striking innovations. Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun invites the listener into a dreamlike world, full of lush orchestral color and mesmerizing flute solos. Next, Robert Young takes on Connesson’s A Kind of Trane, a contemporary concerto written in homage of Coltrane’s extraordinary musicianship, right on time for the legend’s 100th birthday. Finally, the Holland will barely contain Prokofiev’s brilliantly bombastic Symphony No. 5, which rampages with mischief, mayhem, and genuine emotional depth.
